싱건탕프로젝트(Fish Soup Project) [모 아니면 도 야 (All or nothing)]

‘싱건탕’은 맑게 끓인 국이다. 재료 본연의 맛이 우러나오도록 오래 끓여 최소한의 간으로만 먹는 ‘싱거운’ 국물이다. ‘싱겁다’는 말은 간이 약하다는 뜻이기도 하지만, 누군가의 말이나 행동이 상황에 딱히 어울리지 않아 엉뚱한 느낌을 줄 때에도 쓰인다. 요리의 간이 약하면 재료의 존재감이 드러나고, 상황에 어울리지 않는 말과 행동을 하는 이는 종종 특별한 존재로 다가온다. 싱건탕프로젝트(Fish Soup Project)라는 이름에서부터 우리는 이들의 ‘싱거운’ 매력을 짐작할 수 있다. 오랜 기간 다양한 음악 활동을 통해 구축해 온 연주자들 각각의 색채가 온전히 드러나는, 다섯 곡의 특별한 음악이 여기에 있다.

Lonely Love (작곡 김도용/편곡 싱건탕프로젝트)
서부 영화의 주인공들은 늘 어딘가 외롭고, 쓸쓸하다. 광활하고 메마른 사막은 그들 내면의 공허함과 맞닿아 있다. 하지만 한 때는 사랑도 있었으리라. 모든 폭력으로부터 나를 견디게 해주는 유일한 위안. 느린 발걸음을 닮은 드럼 소리 위로 따뜻하게 흐르는 관악기의 연주는 사막을 가로지르는 깊고도 아름다운 사랑의 흔적이다. 그들은 알았을까, 고독하게 걷는 걸음걸음 선명하게 남는 그 흔적을.

Night Walk (작곡 김동환/편곡 김동환)
고된 하루를 마치고 집으로 돌아가는 길, 하루의 온갖 고민은 잠시 사라지고 차가운 밤공기는 음악이 된다. 달빛 아래 꿈꾸듯 나지막한 기타 소리, 관악기들이 불러오는 희미한 기억의 조각들. 싱건탕프로젝트는 굳이 뭔가를 선명하게 그리려하지 않는다. 무작정 위로하지도, 희망을 강요하지도 않는다. 그저 옆에서 묵묵히 함께 걸어줄 뿐이다. 밤은 그렇게 흘러간다.

Pit Head(도계갱) (작곡 배선용/편곡 싱건탕프로젝트)
강원도 삼척시 도계읍에는 크고 작은 탄광들이 있었다. 볼품없어 쫄딱 구덩이라 불리는 곳도 있었다. 광부들은 매일 같이 어둡고 축축한 땅 속으로 걸어 들어갔다. 먼지를 덮어 쓴 깊은 어둠도 누군가의 삶이었다. 그 안에서도 여전히 희망은 빛났고, 서로의 온기는 따뜻했다. 고단했지만 다정한 이야기들이 함께 했다. 지금은 녹슬고 낡아 버렸을 철문 너머의 선명한 기억이 이 트랙에 고스란히 스며있다. 출정을 알리는 관악기 인트로, 이어지는 에너제틱한 기타 리프는 힘찬 하루의 시작을, 묵직한 베이스 라인은 광부들의 묵묵한 걸음이 된다. 각 악기들의 힘있는 솔로 연주는 삶을 향한 뜨거운 열정과 치열한 순간들을 노래하고 있다.

Geum Jin(금진항) (작곡 배선용/편곡 싱건탕프로젝트)
작곡가의 유년 시절이 담겨있는 트랙이다. 작곡가가 자란 강릉시 옥계면에 위치한 금진항은 아직도 옛 모습을 그대로 간직하고 있는 아름다운 어항이다. 음악은 전체적으로 뱃노래의 이미지를 드러낸다. 드럼은 출항을 앞둔 선원의 심장 박동처럼 두근대고, 트롬본은 뱃고동 소리와 같다. 관악기의 합창은 노동요를 떠올리게 한다. 반복되는 주제 선율은 인터루드를 거쳐 후반부로 가면 동일한 리듬 패턴에 다른 음을 선택하는 형태로 변주되는데, 이러한 전개 양상은 마치 어린 아이의 상상력처럼 흥미롭다. 아이의 눈에 배가 오고가는 금진항의 모든 풍경은 하나의 모험이 아니었을까. 음악은 마지막 드럼 솔로에서 절정에 이르는데, 이쯤 되면 싱건탕프로젝트의 라이브 연주가 궁금해질 차례다. 음반에 미처 담기지 못했을, 날 것 그대로의 에너지를 상상해본다.

Perfect Kitchen (작곡 배선용/편곡 싱건탕프로젝트)
어린 시절, 엄마의 부엌에는 많은 이야기가 있었다. 그 곳은 엄마의 꿈과 희망과 눈물이 깃든 특별한 세계였다. 해가 아른아른 넘어갈 무렵, 집 안 가득 퍼지던 갓 지은 밥 냄새는 엄마의 낮은 노랫소리 같았다. 식탁에 가만히 앉아 바쁘게 움직이는 엄마의 뒷모습을 넋 놓고 바라보곤 했다. 그 완벽했던 부엌의 풍경은 음악이 되었다. 반복되는 선율 속에 조금은 슬프게, 더러는 아련하게 펼쳐지는 그 시간들.

싱건탕프로젝트 앨범에서 또 하나의 주목할 점은 각 트랙마다 뮤직 비디오가 존재한다는 점이다. 가사가 없는 대신 ‘보는 음악’을 통해 자신들의 메시지를 효과적으로 전달한다. 시각적 이미지와 결합된 음악은 더욱 강력한 서사를 획득한다. 때로는 정적으로, 때로는 역동적인 구성으로 음악에 에너지를 더하고 있는 뮤직 비디오의 존재는 싱건탕프로젝트만의 매력을 한층 더하는 요소가 된다.

Fish Soup Project

We once again raise our glasses this month with a clear fish soup.

"Singgeon-tang" is a clear soup, simmered for a long time to extract the natural flavors of the ingredients, seasoned only lightly. The word "singgeopda" (meaning bland) can refer to food with mild seasoning, but it can also describe words or actions that feel out of place, giving off an unexpected charm. When food lacks strong seasoning, the essence of the ingredients stands out, and those who act unconventionally often come across as unique individuals. From its name alone, we can anticipate the "bland" yet captivating charm of Fish Soup Project. This album features five special tracks that showcase the distinct musical colors of each member, developed through years of diverse musical experiences.

Lonely Love (Composed by Kim Doyong / Arranged by Fish Soup Project)
The main characters of Western films are always lonely and melancholic. The vast, barren desert mirrors the emptiness within them. But once, there must have been love—the only solace that helped them endure all the violence. Over the slow, steady drumbeats reminiscent of weary footsteps, warm brass melodies trace the lingering echoes of love across the desert. Did they know? That each lonely step they took left such vivid traces behind.

After a long day, on the way home, all the worries of the day fade away, and the cold night air transforms into music. Under the moonlight, a soft guitar hums like a dream, while the brass instruments bring forth fragments of faint memories. Fish Soup Project does not try to paint a clear picture, nor do they force comfort or impose hope. They simply walk beside you in quiet companionship. And so, the night flows on.

Pit Head (Dogyegang) (Composed by Bae Sunyong / Arranged by Fish Soup Project)
In Dogye-eup, Samcheok City, Gangwon Province, there once were many coal mines. Some were so small and shabby they were called "cholddak pits" (meaning makeshift holes). Every day, the miners walked into the dark, damp underground. That dust-covered darkness was still someone’s life. Even within it, hope continued to shine, and the warmth of companionship remained. Though the work was exhausting, they shared moments of kindness. The memories of those rusted and worn-out mines are etched into this track. The introductory brass fanfare signals the start of a new day, followed by an energetic guitar riff symbolizing a strong beginning, while the heavy bassline mirrors the miners' steady footsteps. Each instrument’s powerful solo tells a story of passion and the intense moments of life.

Geum Jin (Geumjin Port) (Composed by Bae Sunyong / Arranged by Fish Soup Project)
This track captures the composer’s childhood memories. Geumjin Port, located in Okgye-myeon, Gangneung City, remains a beautiful fishing village that has preserved its past. The music embodies the essence of a seafaring song. The drums pulse like the heartbeat of a sailor preparing to depart, while the trombone echoes like the sound of a ship’s horn. The brass ensemble evokes traditional labor songs. The recurring main theme transforms in the latter half, where the same rhythmic pattern is played with different notes, much like the playful imagination of a child. To a child’s eyes, the comings and goings of ships at Geumjin Port must have been an adventure. The music reaches its peak with an intense drum solo, leaving one wondering—what would Fish Soup Project’s live performance feel like? It would be interesting to imagine the raw, unfiltered energy that the album could not fully capture.

As a child, my mother’s kitchen was filled with stories. It was a special world where her dreams, hopes, and tears resided. At dusk, the scent of freshly cooked rice filled the house like her gentle humming. Sitting quietly at the dining table, I would gaze in awe at her busy figure, moving gracefully. The perfect scenery of that kitchen has now become music—a repetitive melody that unfolds with a touch of sadness and a sense of nostalgia.

One noteworthy aspect of this album is that each track has its own music video. Instead of lyrics, Fish Soup Project conveys their message through "visual music." By combining music with visual imagery, they create a stronger narrative. Whether with static or dynamic compositions, the presence of these music videos enhances the energy of their music, adding another layer to their distinctive charm.

Now, life has become music, and music has become a story. The story of Fish Soup Project lingers by our side. (Jazzology)
