Similar to the way oceanic islands arise from volcanic activity, Seven Steps to Island is the prod-uct of a unique combination of pressure, heat, and timing. Hong-Gie Kim came to California on January 5th, 2025 with an idea to create a new form of music. This production had been care-fully planned for many months and was supported by the Korean Government, Seoul Institute of the Arts, CultureHub, and California Institute of the Arts. Hong-Gie’s’ vision required musicians who were able and willing to enact a dialogue between Balinese gamelan, traditional Korean rhythms, and jazz, so my first step was to call multi-instrumentalist Vinny Golia: “Vinny! I need you- and I need a big favor.” That favor was to bring his friend and colleague, I Nyoman Wen-ten, the legendary master of Balinese music and dance, into the project. I held my breath. Without Wenten, I did not know how we would bring this dream into reality. But Vinny is mag-ic and Wenten said yes. The second step was complete: Wenten and Hong-Gie’s deep percussive abilities and similar, joyful spirits would become the heartbeat of the project. Third step- round out the sound with Jonathan Stearns, whose cornet would offer nuanced counterpoint to Vinny’s bold, intricate woodwinds and whose deep keys could provide basslines and tonal textures for a new sound. When the musicians met in a Zoom call to discuss the concept in October 2024, the chemistry felt right and we hit step four: Hong-Gie Kim’s Atmosphere was real.
In January we would have 1 week to make it all happen, so planning had to be tight. The logis-tics of planning a recording session when one does not yet know what the music will be are hard to pinpoint, but luck flowed our way. Wenten graciously extended the use of the Gamelan room at CalArts for rehearsals, and Vinny invited recording engineer John Baffa to the project. John arranged to hold the recording session in CalArts’ incredible ROD studio. When he told us that he had a vintage Ludwig kit in the studio for Hong-Gie to play, it was clear that our feet were on step 5.
The Palisades fire started on the first day of 2025 and was already burning when Hong-Gie’s plane touched down in LA on January 5th. January 7th, the Eaton fire began and life as we knew it changed: Los Angeles county was enveloped by the most devastating wildfires in our history- fires that would destroy over 18,000 homes and structures by the time they were fully contained.
Many of our friends and families lost homes and businesses to the blaze (even beloved members of Wenten’s Gamelan Orchestra); mass evacuations were in effect; Hong-Gie had left town for a convention and could not return due to road closures; we were all living with emergency suit-cases by the front door. But our hearts were alive inside of this time of collective struggle, and the promise of music kept us steady.
Step 6. The roads were clear and safe on the 11th for our first rehearsal. And the next, and the next. Hong-Gie led rigorous rehearsals, set compositional structures guided by his precise drumming. Hong-Gie Kim’s Atmosphere became a space in which formal structure dances with improvisational flight. The music became an entity bigger than the quartet, and Baffa captured the island as it emerged during one day-long recording session.
Step 7 was achieved upon Hong-Gie’s return to South Korea during many meticulous and in-spired mixing and mastering sessions with Ho-Jung Kang,
It is with great love that we offer Seven Steps to Island to listeners in stereo and Atmos mixes. Each track feels like a miracle to me- a veritable island of hope in a world that continues to know flames; a living example of the way ancient and modern instruments, rhythms, and sounds can mingle and become something new. We invite you to share in the solace, fantasy, and won-der of our island, and to find a place of comfort within it.

Seven Steps to Island는 마치 화산 활동으로 태어난 섬처럼, 뜨거운 열기와 압력, 그리고 우연을 가장한 필연의 타이밍 속에서 탄생했습니다. 이 앨범은 단순한 연주의 결과물이 아닌, 대륙과 대륙을 잇고, 시간과 문화를 교차시키며, 현실의 재난과 음악적 희망 사이를 관통한 여정 그 자체입니다.
2025년 1월 5일, 김홍기(Hong-Gie Kim)는 새로운 음악을 향한 비전을 품고 캘리포니아에 도착했습니다. 한국 전통 리듬, 발리의 가믈란, 그리고 재즈의 언어를 대화하듯 엮어내겠다는 그의 구상은 곧 하나의 프로젝트로 구체화되었고, 대한민국 정부, 서울예술대학교, 컬처허브(CultureHub), 그리고 캘리포니아 예술대학(CalArts)의 지원 속에서 숨을 쉬기 시작했습니다.
모든 것은 하나의 전화로 시작됐습니다. 김홍기는 멀티악기 연주자 비니 골리아(Vinny Golia)에게 전화를 걸어 말했습니다.
“비니, 당신이 필요해요. 그리고 큰 부탁이 있어요.”
그 부탁은 발리 음악과 무용의 전설, 이 뇨만 웬튼(I Nyoman Wenten)을 프로젝트에 초대하는 일이었습니다. 그의 수락은 단순한 참여 이상의 의미를 지녔습니다. 홍기와 웬튼, 두 사람의 타악적 직감과 에너지가 이 앨범의 심장이 되었기 때문입니다.
조너선 스턴스(Jonathon Stearns)의 참여는 사운드의 결을 더욱 풍부하게 만들어 주었습니다. 코넷과 키보드를 통해 그는 김홍기의 ‘Atmosphere’에 섬세한 선율과 깊이 있는 화성을 불어넣었고, 이로써 음악은 구체적인 형체를 갖기 시작했습니다.
2024년 10월, 뮤지션들은 처음 온라인으로 만나 아이디어를 나눴고, 그 자리에서 강한 교감이 형성되었습니다. 그렇게 ‘Hong-Gie Kim Atmosphere’는 현실로 태어났습니다.
그러나 이 프로젝트는 단순한 레코딩이 아니었습니다.
2025년 새해, 팔리세이즈와 이튼에서 시작된 대형 화재는 LA 전역을 덮쳤고, 수많은 이들이 삶의 터전을 잃었습니다. 우리 중 많은 이들이 대피 가방을 문 앞에 두고, 음악과 재난 사이에서 하루하루를 살아냈습니다. 그 속에서도 김홍기는 포기하지 않았고, 팀은 희망을 붙잡은 채 리허설을 준비했습니다.
1월 11일, 마침내 첫 리허설이 시작되었습니다.
그 날 이후 이어진 리허설에서 홍기는 드러머이자 리더로서, 즉흥성과 구조를 넘나드는 새로운 음악 공간을 창조했습니다. 이 앨범은 단 하루, 라이브 세션으로 녹음되었고, 녹음 엔지니어 존 바파(John Baffa)는 그 순간의 생명력과 진동을 오롯이 포착해냈습니다.
그렇게 우리는 이 프로젝트의 여섯 번째 단계를 완수했습니다.
마지막 일곱 번째 단계는, 한국으로 돌아온 김홍기가 강호정(Ho-Jung Kang)과 함께 믹싱과 마스터링 작업을 정교하게 다듬으며 마무리되었습니다. 그 과정에서 각 트랙은 하나의 ‘섬’이 되었고, 고대의 리듬과 현대의 감각이 공존하는 생명체로 재탄생했습니다.
Seven Steps to Island는 단순한 음악이 아닙니다.
이 앨범은 불타는 현실 속에서 피어난 하나의 기적,
그리고 서로 다른 언어와 악기가 만들어낸 하나의 섬입니다.
이 음악이 당신에게 위로와 환상, 경이로움을 선사하길 바랍니다.
