This track is a passionate protest blues that shatters the "fabricated peace" maintained by those in authority, demanding that leaders demonstrate true guidance through "virtue" and their "way of life."
The song opens with a declaration rejecting the false peace offered by information: "Turn off the TV! Tear up the newspaper!" The narrator sees through the hypocrisy of the ruling class and urges them not to ignore the deep-seated ailment afflicting the nation. The core of the chorus is a plea for "rule by virtue," based on classical Confucian thought. In the first chorus, the common people express their fierce resolve: if the leader strays from the correct path, "we, the common people, will scream what is right and wrong" to guide them back. In the second chorus, the song asserts that "your virtue is the North Star that illuminates the darkness!" It argues that the leader's character and integrity, not law or force, are the only elements that can command the people's hearts. Inspired by his deceased father's lesson that "silence is the same as sin," the protagonist vows to sing until his voice gives out. The furious, breathless harmonica solo powerfully conveys this desperate cry of the soul. |
