| I turned 60 this year and work as a doctor in the middle of nowhere in the Kanto Plain, 100km north of Tokyo. I resumed composing in 2018 after a 32-year hiatus. My father's work took me to New York for two years, from 1978 to 2019, where I was introduced to jazz and wanted to compose. By chance, when I was a teenager, I met Katsu, who graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, mastered the 10-string guitar stick, and returned to Japan. He taught me jazz arrangements. Without him, I wouldn't have the composing skills I have today. Even though I haven't done any musical work for 32 years, it's thanks to him that I'm able to compose music now. New York is my second home, a city I want to live in. However, the harsh reality is that my dream of living in New York likely won't come true in the future. I occasionally compose musics that evoke my feelings for New York, hoping to at least express them in my music. |
